This miniseries was written and produced by Ronald D. Moore and was based on the 1978 BSG-series. It originally aired on December 8, 2003 and it attracted upto 4.5 million viewers – one of the highest viewing ratings for a syfy show ever.

The story sets up 40 years after the armistice between the Colonies of Kobol and the Cylons.

The Galactica is an epic warship that was built in the early years of the First Cylon War and under command by Commander William Adama and Colonel Saul Tigh. In the days leading up to its decomissioning – and alteration into a museum – Servicemen and -women have to juggle their duties with the burdains of guided tours, planned celebrations and tourists. Hangar Deck 3 is changed into a gift shop.

After 40 years of complete radio silence from the Cylons, they launch an all-out surprise attack on the Colonies in order to exterminate the human race – setting off several nuclear devices, killing billions of people. The Twelve Colonies of man are wiped out almost completely as most of its military and defense mechanisms are either destroyed or ineffective. Unbeknownst to the Colonists, Cylons evolved from their sentient-robot state into humanoid models and have infiltrated the colonies – some more succesful than others. One particular successful model is Cylon No 6, also known as Caprica, who manages to install Cylon software into the Colonial Defense Mainframe.

Because its computers aren’t networked, Galactica isn’t affected by the Cylon software, leaving it to be the last beacon of hope for mankinds 50.000 survivors.
Secretary of Education, Laura Roslin (succession number 43) is sworn in as president as the entire line of presidential succession before her dies in the attacks.

All remaining ships, shuttles and survivors meet up at the Colonial Armory Station of Ragnar Anchorage where they have to face the attacking Cylon Fleet in the hopes of being able to fight another day.
