Right before SYFY started their Battlestar Galactica marathon in the weekend of September 22-24, both Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff interacted with fans through the social media platform Reddit for a 1-hour long AMA-session. (AMA: “ask me anything”). The title to each transcript also leads to the original Reddit AMA page
Hey, Reddit. I’m Tricia Helfer, actor and Cylon. And soon to be BSG episode analysis podcaster with Marc Bernardin. I’ve partnered with SYFY so we could chat any and everything science fiction. I’m here to answer your questions, so strap in and fire away! I’ll begin answering questions around 1 PM EST/ 10 AM PST.
my_so_called_life: Hey Tricia! What’s your favorite brand of toaster?
Also, I read one of your articles in a dog magazine at a vet office last year. What’s the craziest thing your pets have done?
Tricia_Helfer: No favorites of anything.
When my first two cats were little, they were chasing each other at 4:30am and knocked over a side table. It had wrought iron legs with curls at the bottom. Bella ran through it, knocked it over and got her head stuck – like a kid with a stairwell bannister or something – and we couldn’t get her back out. Tried to pry it open a bit with a large pliers (I was holding her body with one hand and her head with the other while my boyfriend tried to pry it open. The pliers broke and sliced through my wrist down to the tendon. Wrapped up my wrist and called the doorman who had the janitor come in from Brooklyn to open the supply closet (now 5:30am) and he came up with a metal saw and hand sawed through 1″ thick wrought iron (with Bella’s little neck still inside). Took 45min but finally got her out. She seemed traumatized but fine so I took off to emergency to get stitched up. Then took her to the vet. She was fine, but 6month later I ended up having surgery on the tendon to remove scar tissue (it had cut into the sheath surrounding the tendon) so I could move my wrist properly again.
FreemanC17: Hey Tricia! Still to this day, i’m showing more and more people Battlestar Galactica, and every single one are citing Caprica Six as one of their favorite characters. Almost 8 years later and people still love every part of this show, so thank you for helping make it a reality 🙂
My question is: Given your involvement with a lot of different mediums of Science Fiction, what was it like going from a character like Six to a different kind of AI character like EDI of Mass Effect 2 and 3?
Thanks again for all you’ve done, and i can’t wait to see what the future holds. So say we all!
Tricia_Helfer: Thank you.
Voicing EDI was way different than portraying Six. With Mass Effect, there was no script so I had no idea what was going on. I would show up at the studio, head into the booth, put on the headphones and a line would appear on the computer screen and the record button would come on. I’d read it a few times and then another line would appear. Literally the first time I would see a line, and read it, it was being recorded. I really still have no idea what the story is.
jumperposse: Hi Tricia! I just want to say that I am honored that you follow me on Instagram. Raven and Woodhouse say hi! We were actually watching Lucifer on Hulu when I saw you commented on one of my posts. I started jumping up and down like a crazy person haha. I love all the work you do with animals. You truly are a beautiful person, inside and out.
What all can we expect from Charlotte’s character in the future now that she is no longer “Mom”? If you are able to answer that…
Tricia_Helfer: Awe, thank you. Love seeing your posts about those two crazy lovebird friends.
Charlotte is having an identity crisis for sure. She doesn’t remember the last four months at all (since we was technically dead), but she’s hearing about all the things she supposedly did. For a strong women, the thought of her having a nervous breakdown or a mental break is embarrassing for her and she’s trying to hide the fact that she doesn’t remember anything. Plus, she’s having horrible nightmares of something she can’t understand. The beginning of her story really is about her trying to figure herself out, and what happened to her.
djshiva: I know you are also a cat lover. Tell us about your cats. What are their names, breeds/colors? Any funny cat stories? Basically, just talk about cats because…cats. 🙂
Tricia_Helfer: My cats are my loves. I’ve got Fiona crawling up my back right now. They are all rescues so all different types of breeds and colors and mixes. One funny thing is one of my cats insists on bring my pilates reformer foot straps to me. He insists that they belong upstairs instead of in my gym downstairs. I keep carrying them back down and almost immediately he starts hauling them back up. Their names (some have passed) are: Mr. Nix, Bella, Delilah, Frankie, Bug, Cesar, Lily, Rigby, Fiona, Lebron, Prissie, Max, Summer, Sam, Buster.
AmblinFan26: Hey Tricia! I’m a big fan and you were one of my celebrity crushes in high school and currently in my adult life. Thank you for taking the time to do this AMA today!
My question is: if you bumped into someone who knew about BSG but only seen the miniseries, what are the 5 essential episodes to recommend for that person to watch?
Tricia_Helfer: Oh gosh, I don’t really remember episode names. I’m about to start doing a podcast with Marc Bernardin doing a rewatch of the entire series and a podcast for each episode. We are taping the first few before the end of the month and it will launch sometime in October, so watch out for it! I’d be better to answer after that as it’ll all be refreshed in my mind. Definitely the first one though, 33. Other ones that stick out to me are probably my heavier episodes, haha. Downloaded. The two part Pegusus ones. The one where Adama loses it in his cabin drunk.
dxsinner: If you could choose any of your fellow BSG alumni to work together with again, who would it be?
Follow up: Do you have any other things that you’d like to work on? Ie: Directing/writing or are you more comfortable in front of the camera?
Tricia_Helfer: I’d work with them all! I’ve actually worked with Micheal Trucco since. He played my brother on Killer Women. Was great because since he’s one of my good friends, we already had that vibe and didn’t have to “act” it really. I do want to do a reboot of Cagney and Lacey with Katee Sackhoff : ) I could see directing at some point, but not yet. Definitely producing is in my future though. Have a project right now that I’m currently in deal stages on.
Zebanash: Hi Tricia, Thanks for doing this ama!
How was working on Command and Conquer 3, did you feel it was really different working on a video game vs. working on tv/movies?
Tricia_Helfer: Command and Conquer was my first video game, I think, if I’m remembering correctly. It was live action though, not just voice, so it wasn’t that much different than working on tv/movies. Less plot, of course, and more game play type one liners, but fairly similar than when you are just doing voice.
gjcbs 218: Awesome work on Rick & Morty (and all those other roles we have loved seeing/hearing you do).Did you and James record your Rick & Morty dialogue together or separately?
How often do you see other BSG cast members in real life?
Tricia_Helfer: James and I recorded separately, which is normal in voice work.
I see other BSG cast all the time. Not as much the Vancouver based actors obviously, but the LA ones. Katee, Trucco, James I see a lot. Eddie often, and Mary occasionally. Used to see Jamie quite a bit but his family moved to France about two years ago.
MostDishonorable: Hey! I was one of your drivers @Dragoncon (for the past 4 years).
I’ve heard stories of different stars and their attitudes toward the “Con” environment. What keeps you coming back?
I always have tiny unexpected moments with guests (I got to sing “the Monster Mash” with Peter Mayhew last year) that stick in my head as special and priceless. Do you have any particular stories about crazy happenstances that happened outside of the ‘walk of fame’ or a panel?
Tricia_Helfer: Well, hello. No stories that come to mind right now. Dragon Con is insane though! I actually stayed really quite this year. Two years ago when I was there and a lot of BSG cast was, we went out every night and I got really sick afterwards. This year I was heading back to film Lucifer so I wanted to make sure I was rested. I was very quiet this year.
Basically I enjoy meeting the fans and hearing their stories. Without fans, we wouldn’t have jobs : )
kuahara: Hi Tricia,
I got to meet you and a lot of the BSG cast at various comic cons over the years. I heard you tell a story about one of the sex scenes between Six and Baltar being rather impromptu and taking place on one of the few occasions when your husband was observing.
Were they just having a go at you to see how that would play out with him on set?
Also, do you still remember most of the BSG story? During the Q&A panel with Katee and Jamie a few years ago, it seemed like neither of them had seen the show before.
Tricia_Helfer: No, it wasn’t planned cause he was visiting, it was just coincidence. My husband almost never came to set. Lots of people visit sets, but I generally don’t have visitors. It was an episode that Eddie was directing and he had just decided that it was something he wanted to add to the scene. Just mentioned it that morning to James and I, with no knowledge that Jonathan had been up that weekend and was coming with me to set for a few hours before heading to the airport to fly back home to LA. I remember the story, yes, but some elements are hazy. You certainly forget some things. The story is all wrapped up in memories of not only the story but also the filming and things that happen on set and such, so it’s different than just watching it. It can get muddled more.
14-17-21-31-64-20: Hi Tricia, I just wanted to say that the Carla arc was my favorite in Burn Notice.
You also did an amazing job as Black Cat in Spectacular Spider-man. If given the opportunity would you be interested in voicing the character again?
Tricia_Helfer: Thanks, I had fun with her. Would have loved to get a little more inside look into Carla though. Was just starting to see a crack in her when Fiona shot her. Absolutely would be interested in voicing black cat again.
Snowbank_Lake: Hello! I’ve only recently started watching Battlestar Galactica. Was it annoying having to act so overly-seductive all the time? My husband laughs when I protrude my chin out and go “Gaiussss.”
Tricia_Helfer: It got a little tiresome by the end of season one/beginning of season two because it was only Head Six in the story at that point. But with my other characters that weren’t overly seductive, it balanced out for me.
NedKon: Hi Tricia! What was your absolute favorite tv or movie role to play and why?
Tricia_Helfer: actually don’t have favorites of anything. Never have. No favorite food, book, etc. I’ve certainly had roles I’ve liked more than others, but favorite, no. They are all different experiences on screen and behind the scenes. I loved BSG, of course. Really enjoying Lucifer right now, and I loved playing Molly Parker in Killer Women. The project wasn’t the strongest overall, but the character was so much fun.
jeffsworkreddit: Hi Tricia! I have had 6 heart surgeries and the result is I now require an ICD. My coworkers who are avid BSG fans refer to me as a toaster. Would Caprica 6 have any advice on living life on a battery and a computer?
Tricia_Helfer: Wow, that’s amazing to have had that many. Sorry you’ve had to go through all that. Keep staying strong, as you clearly are. Caprica Six might have some advice, but seeing I’m not actually a robot, nor a doctor (and a total tech idiot), I don’t have any advice.
rogueypiesladyhuman: Hi Tricia! How did you get into the mindset of Six? Would you have chosen a different ending for her and Gaius?
Tricia_Helfer: It depending on which Six I was playing. Their previous interactions with humans helped me define what their mindset would be. I’m happy that Gaius and Caprica ended up together. Not sure I would change anything of Ron Moore’s vision.
mcgrad22: Hello from a fellow Canadian! Tricia, I absolutely loved you (and Katee, too) in BSG! My question is: If traveling to work was not an issue (ie, we had transporter technology), which place on Earth would be your favourite place to make your home?
Tricia_Helfer: Well, if traveling was no problem, I’d have a place in Italy, one in California (luckily I do), one on an island somewhere like Maldives, or maybe the Australian Gold Coast. Of course, I’d need a lot of money…so likely I’d just be right where I am in California
Imminnoww: Why did Six kill that baby? 🙁
Tricia_Helfer: It was a mercy killing. Six was fascinated with seeing the innocence of the baby (holding one for the first time) and knew that the bombs were going to go off soon, so chose to end the baby’s life quickly and painlessly rather than having it suffer during the bombing.
]INGranny: Question re: Lucifer. Will Charlotte be as significant to story line this season?
Tricia_Helfer: Charlotte is not in the first few episodes, but then comes back with an interesting story line. “Welcome Back Charlotte Richards” was really fun for me to play. Overall though, no, I don’t think she’ll have as significant of a role as Mom, since she’s no longer the mother of Lucifer.
Iksvr : hanks for doing this. Loved BSG. What has been your most awkward starstruck moment? Not a fan meeting you,but you meeting someone you’re a fan of?
Tricia_Helfer: When I presented at the Hockey awards. They pulled me backstage to go on soon, and I walked into the greenroom full of hockey greats. I think I stuck myself up against a wall, behind a big barrel of gatorade bottles, and just sort of stared.
]reclaimandrevolve: What convinced you to take the role of 6?
Tricia_Helfer: I loved the script. Plus it had emmy/oscar nominated headliners (Eddie and Mary). And…I was a brand new actor with almost no credits. With a script that good, it was a no brainer.
McWeen: What is the most interesting thing a fan has ever given you at a con?
Tricia_Helfer: One gal in London recently gave me hand knitted toys for my cats. Half filled with catnip and half filled with bells. They’ve been a big hit.
JakeeRase: Just got through watching Ascension, any word on the possibility of it being picked up again?!?! I would love to see more of Christa’s story.
Tricia_Helfer: No, it’s done. The sets were massive and would have to be rebuilt.
underdabridge: Not counting your own… What TV series finale episode have you loved the most and which one disappointed you the most. Why?
Tricia_Helfer: Ack, hard to answer as I really don’t watch that much. Grew up without a television also so can’t go back to that time period for any ideas. Last I binged was Bloodline and Handmaids Tale (I think that’s what it’s called…blanking right now). Regardless, it was amazing. Sorry, that’s not really answering your question though.
bigtreeworld: Do you have any funny or crazy stories from working on BSG?
Also, was working on the miniseries any different from working on the show that followed it?
Tricia_Helfer: Lots of fun stories. The main difference between the mini and the rest of the series was a few different key crew that didn’t want the time commitment of a series (DP, costumes) and changing from film to high definition video.
eveliendorien Hi There 🙂 What is the most rewarding kitten (or else) rescue you’ve ever done or the one that felt most rewarding, at least?
Tricia_Helfer: They are all rescues so have all been rewarding. I think two that we adopted as seniors were both amazing and I like putting out there that adopting seniors can be super, super rewarding. They’ve had a hard life usually and just so happy and thankful to have a loving home.
Igotthepoweroflove: Hi Tricia! Would you go to space if you had the chance? What are some of your fears?
Tricia_Helfer: I’d love to say yes, so I probably would, but I’d be worried.
Fears…I suppose all the normal ones like accident, etc. Nothing sticks out besides that. No phobias that I can think of.
SKTT1Nimmo: hi! you were hilarious and awesome in lucifer.
What was it like working on conman? what was your favorite parts?
Tricia_Helfer: Thank you.
ConMan was fun. Alan is great to work off of, and it was just fun to play a character totally different than I usually play. I liked the intro scene in the hotel lobby maybe the best.
gjcbs: Are there any actors out there you have yet to work with on your bucket list?
Tricia_Helfer: Don’t have a bucket list, but yes, plenty of actors I’d love to work with. I mean, Meryl Streep, Cate Blancett, Michael Fassbender just to name a few.
gjcbs: Hi Tricia, got to meet you at DragonCon this year, you were awesome. You really should bring the red dress to those photoshoots, they would sell out for days!
So, now that you have played a key role in God’s plan, and been Lucifer’s mother; when are you playing the role of THE ONE? 🙂
Love the work with Acting Outlaws, your work with Denden and lastly can I possibly get a “Happy Birthday” shout out since the big 50 is days away?
Tricia_Helfer: Well, happy birthday! And Yes, I’ll have to make a point to do a photoshoot sometime at a convention with the dress : ) I don’t know what “The One” is.
Johaggis: Hey Tricia! I was at the Battlestar panel at Dragon Con a few weeks ago, and I remember you and James Callis mentioning that they didn’t tell you what the characters you two played on Rick and Morty would look like. What did they tell you about the characters in advance?
Tricia_Helfer: They gave me the script, so I had that. Didn’t have the graphics yet.
jamese1313: Hi Tricia! I’m curious about your role in Lucifer… do you think your character arch was done, could’ve kept going for another season, or might come back again after a break, and why?
Tricia_Helfer: I am back. Haven’t been secretive about that, so you’ve missed a bit J
VoodooAK: When you started working on BSG did they test any other red dresses before choosing the signature 6 dress in the show?
And off topic do you still ride often? Any places on your bucket list you’d love to ride some day?
Tricia_Helfer: The costume designer for the miniseries (was different for the rest of the series) designed everything from scratch. She drew the dress and had it made to my measurements. If I’m remembering correctly, it’s pretty much exactly as she drew it. Yes, I still ride. Picking up a new bike tomorrow morning actually. Haven’t had the chance to do any long rides recently. I would love to ride across Canada.
ATerribleUsername: What is your dream role?
Tricia_Helfer: Gretchen Lowell in Heartsick. Trying to get that produced right now but can’t be guaranteed I’ll get to play her even if I’m a producer on it.
dumaflachestoopnagle: Peanut butter or almond butter?
Tricia_Helfer: Almond butter.
underdabridge: Were you as disappointed with the BSG ending as we were? If so would you say so in public?
Tricia_Helfer: No I was not. I believed in Ron’s vision. I’d say about half the people I meet liked it and half didn’t
fokkenrat: Did you play Mass Effect? 😀
Tricia_Helfer: I didn’t play. Haven’t played any video games actually. Love voicing them though!
Signing off guys. Thanks so much for participating!
What’s going on, Reddit? I’m Katee Sackhoff, but you might know me better as Captain Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace. I’ve partnered with SYFY to talk any and all things science fiction with YOU, so let’s do it! Ask me anything you want to know! I’ll begin answering questions around 7 PM EST/ 4 PM PST.
Airsay58259: Hello Katee! Thanks for doing this AMA.
I know the Flash probably has spies listening to your every word so can you at least share your first impressions from working on the show? Anything non-spoilery you can tease? I must admit I saw you guys film near a Burnaby bridge one night, no spoilers from me either but it looked epic. Can’t wait for an official costume reveal and to know why poor Danielle was on the ground so much, haha.
Anyway… Starbuck is still to this day my favorite TV character. We may not understand everything about her but well, that’s life isn’t it? We don’t always get answers. Is there something you’re surprised fans don’t ask questions about?
Thank you. Can’t wait to see your Flash episode(s)!
Katee_Sackhoff: I absolutely loved working on the Flash. I’m getting ready to head up to do another episode in the next few weeks. There’s really nothing I can reveal at all, other than the bulk of my scenes have been with Danielle and I adore her. I can’t wait to get back to Vancouver and dive into this character who seems to be quite evil.
Gjcbs: Hey Katee! Great to see you at DragonCon this year! And keep up the work with Acting Outlaws and Denden! I can answer the first 2 questions easy: What was Starbuck? An awesome character. When will Longmire Season 6 be released? Not soon enough.
Okay now on to the real questions: What is it like to have “your” theme song be the whole key to the successful jump that ends the journey? (Bear McCreary did an amazing job on the soundtracks!)
When will we see you doing voice work on Rick & Morty?
Thanks again for doing this AMA Katee!
Katee_Sackhoff: We were lucky enough on BSG to have Bear McCreary and he did a phenomenal job! Because I didn’t really know where BSG was going the song didn’t really carry the weight of what it really was until the end of the show. One of my favorites moments in Battlestar though is when she figures it out and jumps the ship. And I will do Rick & Morty as soon as they ask!
TheStoryOfUs27: Are you and Tricia Helfer secretly competing to see who has a better AMA, cylons or humans? Also thank you for inspiring the most badass tank top combination in fashion.
Katee_Sackhoff: No, Tricia and I are actually incredibly supportive of one another. But I hear her AMA went fantastic this morning! Thank you so much for the comments on the tank top, I actually was just told the other day it was incredibly attractive which I didn’t know that the time. That’s good to know in hindsight!
Ajegwu: Did you expect any backlash for playing a role originally cast as a man? Was there any? How did you deal with it?
What’s the best positive feedback you’ve received for the same?
Thanks for making one of the best TV shows ever!
Katee_Sackhoff: First of all, your welcome and secondly, I didn’t expect any backlash, I guess I was just young and naive and didn’t realize how much love people felt towards the original series. There was a ton of backlash, in the beginning, the way I chose to deal with it was to ignore it. Ultimately, you realize you can’t make everyone happy and as an artist, you just need to stay true to yourself.
Larry-Town: Hey Katee, huge fan here! Thanks for bringing strong female presence to the screen and really nailing Starbuck as a character. I suppose I’d like to know where you think Kara went at the end of her story arc in BSG. It became pretty obvious that there was something crazy going on, but how did you mentally end her story?
Katee_Sackhoff: I wanted to give Starbuck a bit of peace at the end of her journey on the show and because I had know idea what she was or where she went, I created that myself. In my opinion, she went with Anders at the end.
Trwayblahblah: Hi Katee, On Tricia’s AMA she mentioned wanting to do a reboot of Cagney and Lacey with you. Is that something you’d be on board for? I’d watch!
Katee_Sackhoff: Absolutely! I would adore working with Tricia again. It would be a dream to work with one of your best friends on a daily basis. I would absolutely be on board with this, as long as it wasn’t a procedural type of show and more serialized.
AtheistComic: Starbuck is such a badass character. Are you as much of a badass in real life? If so, pls tell all and if not, what’s holding you back? 🙂
Katee_Sackhoff: am not a badass in real life! I’m a bit more of a wimp to be honest. Not for lack of trying mind you! We must always continue to try to be badasses. But Starbuck was the epitome of what that means, I would never be able to live up to that if I tried.
Iris9570: You have said that Vic Moretti is the most “normal” character you have played, is it easier to play normal or harder to make it believable?
Katee_Sackhoff: It actually is easier to put on a character that’s big or farther away from who you are in reality. When you play a character that is so close to yourself and normal, you run the risk of becoming lazy and just phoning it in every day.
zgold2192: Hey! If you could do a mashup episode of BSG and any other show ever, what would you pick?
Katee_Sackhoff: I think that a BSG/Cheers mashup would be fun. There was actually a bar on BSG so that would play really well or maybe even Night Court. It could have solved some of BSG legal issues!
Notmyusernameforreal: What were you wearing in the bathtub scenes on The Big Bang Theory? Come on, you were all thinking it:
Katee_Sackhoff: I was actually wearing sweatpants and a tube top, so I was completely clothed. I know that’s not a sexy answer, sorry to ruin that for you! There was no real water in that bathtub, just bubbles which are really slippery. We had to push our feet against each other so we wouldn’t slip. I kept kicking him, where you shouldn’t kick a man!
unaverage1: Hi! Thank you for doing this AMA. Battlestar Galactica is the best TV show I’ve ever seen. The performances still move me every time I re-watch it. So thank you for that, too.
Star Wars or Star Trek?
Katee_Sackhoff: First of all thanks for that compliment! I really appreciate it. And secondly, I’m a little biased on this one. I might get kicked out of bed if I don’t say Star Trek. But I want to believe that we have enough love for both of them because I truly can’t pick.
1q2w3e4t5y: On wich spaceship would Starbuck want to serve if it was not on the Galactica?
And who is your favorite science fiction character outside the BSG universe?
PS. You are amazing!!!
Katee_Sackhoff: Oh my god, I’m going to need to rewatch this entire series again with you guys. I have no idea what any of the names of the other ships are! It’s been too many years so a rewatch is definitely going to need to happen.
VoodooAK: Were you familiar with or a fan of the sci-fi genre before BSG?
Any current sci-fi shows you enjoy watching or would like to be a part of?
And of course how goes the motorcycle riding lately?
Katee_Sackhoff: My father raised me on sci-fi and action movies, so I’ve seen most sci-fi movies you could through my way. Right now I’m watching The Handmaids Tale. The motorcycle riding is great thank you very much, although I just had to get eight stitches in my back so I won’t be able to ride for a while now.
CrimsonPig: Would you rather fight 1 fat Apollo or 100 regular-sized Apollos?
Katee_Sackhoff: I would say his fighting ability would not have changed any, he just might have been a little smaller as big Apollo. So I probably would choose him!
AJones93: I just watched BSG for the first time this year. It is my husbands favorite show of all time. I fell in love with BSG and Kara’s character. We got to go to Austin this year and see the reunion panel. I wish I could have met you! Anyway, I am a pianist (my husband is a drummer) and I am learning a lot of the BSG score on the piano right now (particularly Battlestar Sonatica.) Bear McCreary was so creative with the BSG score. We love the BSG score! My question is: what is your favorite song he composed for the show?
Katee_Sackhoff: Oh Jesus! There are so many and I honestly couldn’t pick. Bear McCreary is a true genius.
Mrkloak: Do you think was Starbuck somewhat responsible for Kat’s Suicide?
Katee_Sackhoff: No, absolutely not. I believe at times when people are on this trajectory and if they are very committed to it, while as survivors we may carry a lot of guilt, I don’t know if there is anything you can do. However, we must always try and mental health is a serious issue in this country. So we must never stop trying to help our friends and family. However, I think to say that someone is responsible for another human being’s suicide is terribly irresponsible. That being said, we have seen children fall susceptible and be pushed to suicide by their peer groups and this is an instance when as a society we need to better.
DariusJenai: Hello Katee!
To move slightly away from BSG questions:
Which genre do you have the most fun working with? The more Sci-fi shows like BSG, or the more paranormal ones like Occulus?
Katee_Sackhoff: I loved working on Occulus because it really allowed me to dive into a character that was so outside of who I am as a person. The paranormal ones sort of allow you to have more fun with characters. So I would say those!
Politeandnotgay: Excited to see you on The Flash soon. Was it fun beating up Danielle? Did you get to work with any other actors?
Katee_Sackhoff: How could you possibly know I was beating up Danielle? Cuz that would be a spoiler!
YoullShitYourEyeOut: How was working with Vin Diesel on Riddick?
Katee_Sackhoff: Absolutely amazing! I’m still trying to figure out who I need to bribe to be in the next one! So if you guys can figure that out let me know haha.
PmMeGiftCardCodes: Is Sackoff really your last name? (PS Miss you in Longmire)
Katee_Sackhoff[: Of course, it is! My father had to endure a lifetime of nicknames, we might as well make the name famous.
Ozymander: Good Evening, Katee! If you could be part of any story adapted from a book, which would it be?I think you’d make a great Devi from the Kingkiller Chronicle. I mean perfectly.
Katee_Sackhoff: My favorite book growing up was The 12 Dancing Princesses and I would love somehow, to figure out how to be apart of that. If it ever got made of course!
flotador7: What movie, old or new, had you thinking “damn! I wish I was part of that!” and why?
Katee_Sackhoff: I was obsessed with Indiana Jones growing up! I would have played a rock just to be apart of them.
prozacgod[🍰: How did you feel about the ending of BSG, and the sorta ambiguity of your characters fate?
Katee_Sackhoff: I loved the way it ended and the ambiguity of Starbuck. For me, I don’t think you could have answered who she was and where she went to satisfied the fans. I think the way they chose to end it allowed the audience to have BSG continue to be a personal experience for each viewer and Starbuck’s ending became a personal for the fans, where they could decide for themselves.
borntorun1234: We always hear rumors of BSG coming back, Just curious, have you spoken with other cast members about this and would you be interested in doing it?
Katee_Sackhoff: I would have to say that these rumors are completely false. BUT if for some reason there was a reboot with the same cast, I would find it quite difficult to play Starbuck at this point in my life. She was a great combination of useful angst, guilt, and responsibility that to a certain extent I think because of my age I was able to tap into. I don’t know if I have that in me anymore.
Swimtothemoooon: Hi Katee, do you still ride motorcycles? What’s in the garage these days?
Katee_Sackhoff: Yes! Right now in my garage I have a Harley-Davidson Fatboy, a Suzuki V Strom, a custom Cafe Racer and a Ducati Scrambler.
Reportersteven: Best behind the scenes memory of doing Longmire? (Love that show and I’ll be honest I never would have watched it if I hadn’t watched you in BSG. So happy to see your acting ability chops have so much range)
Katee_Sackhoff: Thank you so very much! The Longmire cast are all very very close and I enjoy working with all of them. But I must say, night shoots with Adam Bartley are one of the funnest things to do.
Mlavan: What was working on 24 like?
Also congrats on getting a shoutout on jeopardy today
Katee_Sackhoff: I loved working with Kiefer and Clayne Crawford he plays such a phenomenal nemesis. Plus, he’s great on Lethal Weapon which is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Oak987: Are they holding you in a van, making you do this ama against your will?
Katee_Sackhoff: How did you know? It’s amazing where they can lure you with vodka.
scarlett_vendetta: Hi Katee, What initially drew you to playing Starbuck? How did it come about that you were offered the role?:
Katee_Sackhoff: Offered the role? Absolutely, not! I auditioned at least 5 to 7 times to play Starbuck. Initially, what drew me to it was the script was fantastic. But I really wanted to shoot a gun! Up until then my career was mostly “typical blonde rules” and I really wanted to expand out of that and Starbuck fit the bill.
LifeAfterCSIdeath: Katee, you obviously appreciate first responders but what appreciation for cops do you have now having played VIC for so long that you didn’t have before?
Katee_Sackhoff: I have always respected police officers. There are so many professions that seem to be thankless these days. I believe that nothing but respect and admiration should be paid to our law enforcement officers when they are doing their job with honor, humility, and respect
icequeen323: Hi Katee! BSG was one of my favorite shows. I also loved you in Riddick and in Longmire. Do you prefer doing movies or TV?
Katee_Sackhoff: I love them both! It’s just a matter of where the strongest character development tends to be and that’s where I gravitate toward.
fivekilometer22: I just wanna say Hi Katee and ask you what kind of music you’re listening to these days. Any bands or songs you recommend? Thanks!:
Katee_Sackhoff: I actually just saw Tom Petty last night. He was absolutely amazing! The day before I was in Phoenix watching U2 and I’m listening to a lot of Bob Marley right now. Music is a really huge part of my life and I couldn’t possibly go a day without playing some sort of vinyl or listening in the car.
Flantheflashfan: Hi Katee. Hope you’re doing alright.
You’re joining the Flash’s Rogues gallery, congrats! Are you allowed to say what brings Blacksmith to Central City? If not, do you have any cool or fun story to share from the Flash set?
Katee_Sackhoff: I’m actually not allowed to share anything of great value. But what I can say is that Blacksmith deals with black market items that are for sale. So, she is potentially just doing that! 😉
Accountnameredacted: What Do you hear?
Katee_Sackhoff: Nothin’ but the rain…BOOM BOOM BOOM.
BeardedGirl: Hey Katee, I can’t wait to see you as Starbuck!
I had a Longmire question, if that’s alright.
Can you hint at when Netflix will release the final season and do you know if there’s any talks about it?
Katee_Sackhoff: I have absolutely no idea when Longmire is going to air and I know that there are discussions about potential movies, but there is nothing definite.
Prof_Boni: I recently learned that you were on Nip/Tuck, but then someone else took over your role during the following season. Why didn’t you come back?
Katee_Sackhoff: I booked a pilot and was not contractually obligated to do any more episodes, so I shot the pilot instead, even though it didn’t get picked up. Then I went on to 24.
LifeAfterCSIdeath: Katee, thanks for the AMA and all you long hard hours working to entertain us. What does Kiwi taste like?
do you ever just take a roll to pay the bills and make the best out of it and find you enjoyed it?
Would it influence your choice of roll later?
Katee_Sackhoff: Oh my gosh you’re so dirty! 😉 And the answer to your question is yes, acting is my job and therefore there are times when you need to pay your bills.
Skeletaur: Have you ever played the BSG board game? If so, what did you think of it? Katee_Sackhoff: I have never played it! But I’ve signed a lot of game pieces.
Pdeepdaman: Hi! Big fan of yours and was wondering if you were given a superhero role – what would it be and why? 🙂
Katee_Sackhoff: I have absolutely no idea! I tend to actually like playing villains more than heroes.
INGranny: After all the remodeling! Will you have to start over? Can you at least switch ovens?
Katee_Sackhoff: Honestly, after I finished the remodeling I got bored and got a new house! I always need a project.
Rickfrancocom: Hi Katee, When’s the next Acting Outlaws ride? Thanks
Katee_Sackhoff: Nothing is planned just yet! But Tricia and I are always up for rides. We’re looking for the time when both of us are available and these days that doesn’t happen a lot!
SammaATL: We love you in Longmire! Have you heard any more about a movie after the series wraps? And how do you feel about the love scenes with Walt assuming the series stays true to the books?
Katee_Sackhoff: I would just say spoilers, spoilers, spoilers all of your questions and I’m glad you love Longmire!
YoullShitYourEyeOut: When is the next Acting Outlaws calendar coming out? I keep reusing my old one even though the days are wrong because I like the pictures.
Katee_Sackhoff: As soon as Tricia and I have the time to actually shoot another one, we’ll do it!
JVThe9: Which of your roles has been your favorite and what is it like knowing you have the fan following you have?
Katee_Sackhoff: My favorite role I’ve ever played was the role Jenny in Girl Flu and I am incredibly thankful to have the fan following that I do. I have a career because of you fans and every single thing that has come in my professional life has been because the fans have supported me.
Blindpandacub: Hey Katee! Huge fan of your work in BSG. Would you rather have Adama or Tigh as your father figure?
Katee_Sackhoff: I would say Adama because he’s a bit more stable and also not a Cylon!
LifeAfterCSIdeath: Katee, I worked with you onset in worcester MA because I was too cheap to pay for comiccons. When I first met you I almost peed my pants Now after working 10 plus movies as Crew i just think of you as a a wicked nice human being and coworker.
My question is How do celebrities like yourself feel the public should know how hard (albeit fun ) making movies is with the demands almost 24/7 sometimes and the gypsy lifestyle?
Would it hurt the celebrity mystique or image if the fans really understood the team effort involved in production?
Could you really do the flash villian like the sarah corvus character?
PS. when are you gonna make mother mary a grandmother? the genepool needs more like you.
Katee_Sackhoff: Wow! Those are a lot of questions. First off thank you so much for working on the film and obviously it’s led to a career in the film industry so I’m glad to know that you enjoyed and got to keep doing it. I do believe that fans should have some idea of how hard actors work. Case in point the hours that the crew and the cast work and then drive themselves to and from work. There are times when it is incredibly difficult to stay awake when you’ve worked a 17 hour day. I believe the union should do a better job protecting actors in circumstances like this. Annnnd the rest of the questions are too personal!
Duffmannn: Hi Katee, What was it like when the fame hit? You probably just like hey I got the part on this sci-fi show and then it takes off and you become a geek icon? What was it like when that first happened?
Katee_Sackhoff: I don’t know if it’s actually really hit? The benefit to playing characters different myself is that I have anonymity still and can basically go most places without being recognized, which provides me with quite a bit of privacy, to be honest.
TheWarDoctor: Seriously, WHAT was Kara Thrace? And thanks for coming out to DragonCon last year.
Katee_Sackhoff: I seriously have idea!!! And you’re welcome.
Whitewallsuprise: What did you have for lunch today ?
Katee_Sackhoff: I had a kombucha and three chicken sausages, sliced tomatoes and four egg whites (with hot sauce) to be specific.
Bobafettish13: Katee will you ever be in Star Wars?
Katee_Sackhoff: JJ knows how to find me! Fingers-crossed, you never know!
DariusJenai: Will you be making a guest appearance on the BSG rewatch podcast Tricia_Helfer mentioned in her AMA?
Katee_Sackhoff: No sorry I actually won’t! But enjoy it.
